Weak financials? I always omitted the internet shorts, except CMGI earlier this year and nuts KLB. But did you notice the poor showings of financials of all sorts, from comsumer finance to bigger houses recently? Of course, some of the Internuts got awkward expensive. But there is always the risk of a far bounce, even DCLK or SPLN (doubled from the low 7+). And when I look at EBAY it reminds me of the July days (and that shorting internuts can kill one on the spot). So, bigger banks may be slower but safer shorts now, as the interest rate curve does not offer that rosy earnings potential on proprietary positions as the years ago. Personally I sold out PVN at 80 and BT right into the Deutsche Bank news earlier. BT seems to be more difficult but after today's $4 drop it went into black. As for Merrill, the troubles are not over. The techs may run some time and any short may be ill-timed but the rest of the universe offers rich valuations. And do not forget to hit the money losing Biotechs once the momentum stalls there. C.
