RPM vs. deb - I don't think one is clearly better than the other. They have about the same abilities. I recently saw a comparison chart of features and it didn't impress me one way or another. What impressed me about debs is the tools used to manipulate them. In addition to the installation system, they are integrated with the delivery method. So instead of just telling you that you need a certain package, it actually gets that package for you.
