PITTSBURGH, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- FORE Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:FORE), a leading global supplier of multiservice networking solutions, today announced that the second largest cable operator in China, China Guangdong Provincial Cable (CGPC), has selected FORE Systems' networking equipment to build its asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network backbone. The equipment will be provided through Global Net Broadband Industry, Inc., a China-based systems integrator. The new network will provide CGPC's 400,000 subscribers with new services, including broadcast video, distance learning, high-speed Internet access and voice switching. "Implementing this ATM network will allow our customers to subscribe to services never before available to them," said general manager of CGPC's Data Center, Wendy Ye. "It will be an honor for our network to help our business customers and we are proud that we can now bring to bear services that are essential in our competitive environment. We are pleased that FORE and Global Net Broadband Industry have done their best to meet our requirements. Their approach will help us run a very efficient network and realize a profit more quickly than we thought possible." Network Built for Reliability, Resilience and Scalability At the core of the network, CGPC will deploy FORE's Network Equipment Building Standards (NEBS) compliant and fully redundant ForeRunner(R) TNX-210 and TNX-1100 ATM switches to provide the end-to-end ATM switching function. CGPC will also deploy FORE's PowerHub(R) enterprise LAN switch to act as an ATM adaptation device to deliver IP traffic to the ATM network. The network was designed to meet or exceed CGPC's strict carrier-class requirements for high reliability, resilience and scalability. The products chosen enable CGPC's operations staff to implement moves, adds and changes to the network without interrupting service to the users. CGPC considered several vendors for this important project. Particular emphasis was put on the vendor's understanding of CGPC's business issues as well as the vendor's market presence, stability and industry proven technology. Additionally, CGPC required a vendor that could offer both enterprise and carrier class products, a migration path to OC-48c, per virtual circuit (VC) queuing, sub-second Private Network-to-Network Interface (PNNI) re-route times and full compliance with NEBS, a strict carrier standard. Finally, the CGPC network operations staff demanded that the entire ATM network be managed by a single network management product. FORE Systems' ability to deliver on all these requirements was a key factor in winning the business. "Our relationship with CGPC is further evidence of our success in the emerging service provider market as a whole, as well as in Asia," commented Yudan Jin, FORE's country manager for China. "By providing network solutions like this, service providers can deploy their networks from a single product family, giving them the scalability and cost economies that will help them deliver a high-performance network with a long life cycle that is also highly profitable." About Guangdong Provincial Cable The Guangdong provincial government owns Guangdong Cable TV (GCATV). GCATV serves more than 400,000 subscribers and operates 30 channels of cable TV programming for the entire Guangdong province, one of the largest provinces in China. It also provides IP and data services via its bi-directional HFC and cable modem network to users throughout the province. The backbone of the ATM-based network services will operate over CGPC's extensive fiber optic network infrastructure. For more information, please visit www.gdcatv.com.cn.
