Another example of how MSD and his team are always ahead of the competition. -------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday October 27, 3:12 am Eastern TimeGateway mulls Asian expansion By Jalil Hamid KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 (Reuters) - U.S. computer maker Gateway Inc is considering expanding its Asian operations with possible ventures in China, South Korea and other countries, Gateway South Asia managing director Robert Chu said on Tuesday. The American personal computer direct-marketer also sees strong upside in its existing Asia-Pacific markets despite the region's financial turmoil, he told Reuters in an interview. Gateway's regional operations currently cover Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore. Despite the crisis, unit shipments in the region rose 74 percent in the third quarter of 1998 from the previous year, the company's latest results showed. Chu said China , the Philippines and South Korea were three potential markets being considered. ''We are evaluating each market...in time all those markets are very good candidates for direct PC sales by Gateway,'' Chu said. In Thailand and Indonesia, the company is selling through local value-added resellers. Chu said the overall PC market conditions in Asia were currently ''very challenging'' due to the economic slowdown across the region. ''However we are very optimistic...We think the economy especially in Malaysia is poised for a rebound,'' he said. ''We want to position ourselves for the long term so we will be able to take advantage of the next phase which will be back to the growth period,'' Chu said. The company started the Asian launch of its new E-500 series workstation product line in Malaysia this week, with immediate availability of the E-5250 workstation. ''Our entry into the workstation market now completes Gateway's product portfolio as an integrated computer systems manufacturer and direct marketer...,'' he said. The new workstation is designed to meet the requirements of mechanical computer-aided design, software development and other sophisticated uses. Gateway, founded in 1985, has manufacturing facilities in Ireland, Malaysia and the United States. Kuala Lumpur is Gateway's regional headquarters for South Asia, covering the Asia-Pacific zone except for Australia and Japan.
