If Kary Mullis or Peter Duesberg come up with some real results, they'll be taken seriously. If they come up with a theory that works better than infectious HIV, they'll be hailed as geniuses. They got some work to do to get to that point. It's a lot easier to criticize a theory than to come up with a theory that works better. For a view that goes a bit beyond the Amazon puff pieces on Duesberg, try search.nytimes.com .

Mr. Duesberg makes virtually no effort to substantiate his most contrarian assertions, many of which are contradicted by reams of published data, while he berates his adversaries for failure to identify the ''one paper that proves'' that H.I.V. causes AIDS. A disproportionate number of footnotes refer to Mr. Duesberg's own work.

Sounds quite scientific to me. Also notable is the publisher, Regnery, a reputable scientific publishing house that should be familiar to the Clinton haters around here. I don't know quite when Kary Mullis signed on as co-author, or if he just wrote a new introduction, there are earlier versions of both the hardcover and paperback listing one Bryan J. Ellison as co-author.

True, sometimes crackpots are right. More often, they're wrong.
