Dell Hits #1 in Workplace PC Sales

Compaq Gains... but Gets Nipped

The initial results from ZD Market Intelligence's study of workplace PC purchases is in, and Dell has hit No.1 for sales to US workplace locations.

This is not the first time that Dell's been No. 1 for a quarter, but it's been a long time since it happened last. The latest data shows that Dell surged their share more than 2% in the quarter, while Compaq was up only about 1%. Which means Compaq is now just a mere half percent behind Dell.

This battle has been brewing for many quarters, with Dell and Compaq really separating themselves from the pack in recent months. The market structure is basically Dell and Compaq, followed by a group that includes IBM, Gateway, HP, and Micron coming up on the outside.

However, on an even more important note, the market is showing an incredible level of consolidation among the top suppliers. If we look at the top six named vendors listed above along with the "white box" business, they are taking a huge share of available market. This basically means that there's not very much left for the other, "smaller" vendors. In short, the share available for the second tier vendors has dropped by more than two thirds in two short years.
