Thank you for the information. I was aware of the restriction on encryption, but not on SMP.

I'm sure the people at distributed.net are aware of the laws under which they operate, and would guess that they (currently) refuse client connections from outside the US.

So I was a little hasty in saying "idle computer time around the globe", although the root of the idea is the same. You're right, we need to watch out for obstacles on our quest for freedom.

Hopefully someday soon the laws whose sole purpose is to keep technology from advancing (or to protect those purveyors of old technology, like Mohair) will disappear.

How's this for a funky idea: Distributed.net should make a deal with Dell (and other vendors) to preinstall the client on every machine shipped.
