to all: MSFT just announced today that they are introducing a SMART CARD which is supposed to cost $3 compared to SUNW $20 cost per card!! Any comments from those more knowledgeable about these things than I??? The smart card technology is the main reason I have held unto SUNW stock. I didnt even realize MSFT could do this. JDN

Yeah, one will be able to pay for each successive 'Win00' service pack release right there on their PCs with their Microsoft (Visual Basic) smart card. The order's themselves though will be processed on Sun servers running open standards and Sun products/enterprise Java technology. That's the WORST case scenario. I'm not sure that MSFT leveraging themselves into the 'smart card' space is going to fly very well with the DOJ which is currently quite active in both the 'smart card' industry and prosecuting exactly this type of monopoly leveraging by Microsoft.

Here is a general Yahoo recap of today's Solaris 7 and the goings on in NYC. I'll be dumbfounded if SUNW doesn't get upgraded tomorrow or Thursday.

Here's the Solaris page. Note that Solaris 7 (2.7) is being released free (cost of media) for developers and personal use and includes 64-bit compilers, JDK 1.2, StarOffice 5 productivity suite, plus plus.
