GI uses C-Cube encoder chips in their headends. The DCT-1000 digital video decoder box, currently in production, does not use Cube's chips. The 5000 plans are for broadcom to combine an MPEG-2 decoding chip with its cable modem chip. That may or may not happen. If it doesn't work, the MPEG-2 decoder is an open slot in this box.

GI may use C-Cube decoder chips in Europe, where boxes have a higher feature set.
