Dreyfus [has] nothing to tell you online whether they have the borrow, but I usually get a phone call within about 10-15 minutes if they can't find the stock. They will tell you if you do a phone trade, they check while you hold.

An order to short with Dreyfus disappears from the Order Review screen if the shares are unavailable. This happens several minutes after you place the order, but long before the phone call comes.
