I recognize this basic information has already been posted but: FWIW: From Argus Research Corporation - 10/28/98 In a move that will add considerably to its expertise in phone networks, BUY-rated Cisco Systems (NASD: CSCO) announced an alliance with Bellcore Corp., which is the former research arm for the Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs). The alliance will focus on developing new open standards-based telephone software systems that would integrate Bellcore's Operations Support Systems OSS) with Cisco's hardware for Internet Protocol networks. This move also shows just how Cisco is aggressively charging into the public carrier space to sell equipment and software and to compete with the likes of Lucent Technologies and Northern Telecom. The amount of expertise Bellcore can provide to Cisco cannot be under-estimated. Bellcore's relationship to the Regional Bells parallels that of Bell Labs to Lucent, and to AT&T before that. It conducts trials on vendors' equipment to make sure the products are compatible with public network standards. It has leading expertise in OSS, which contains a key set of protocols that are essential to the management and function of phone networks. This alliance will help Cisco, which is intent on building an Internet-based network that converges voice, data and multimedia, to make hardware and software that is compatible with industry standards. Bellcore, which used to be owned by the RBOCs, is now a part of SAIC, a privately held research and development contractor. Bellcore continues to provide R&D and certification services on a contractual basis to the RBOCs. We continue to recommend purchase of the CSCO shares with a 12-month target of $73. Cisco will report earnings next week and we expect that strong results will continue to drive the stock. The CSCO shares closed Tuesday at $60-3/4, down 5/8. (DT)
