oh, much too complicated for my pea sized brain.i better concentrate on Sunw instead of solaris. BUT i will print your post and go thru it again and in one year time frame i will be upto speed.

I would guess that within a year's time or less, there will be PC Unix (and probably FREE) that is completely compatible with the current Windows programs you are are now using and optionally contain a nearly identical mindless interface to that which you're used to. Of course, as it is now, it will be exponentially more stable, and have the ascended Unix functionality that remains well beyond Redmond's grasp and capability.

The main thing going against desktop PC Unix today is simply the fact that no first or second tier MSFT OEM will install it as an option (in place of, or along side of Win9x), and for no other reason than they're afraid of economic reprisals from the Crapware monopoly beast.

Hmm... well, apparently, the SI NT server has hosed this morning and I can't post this yet. In the meantime, I just read on Slashdot that RedHat 5.2 is about to be released. I currently use SuSE Linux which is very nice and comes with a lot of STUFF. I found the manual kinda difficult (German->English). I've been looking forward to RedHat 5.2. I understand RedHat to be an easier install, and current RPMs easier to find.

What may be the ideal Linux for a new user (coming from Windows) would be to install is Linux-Mandrake. The current release comes with RedHat 5.1, plus KDE 1.x (a Win95 GUI clone of sorts, only better), simple simon installation scripts, the swell up-to-date SuSE X video drivers, Netscrape, StarOffice(?) and other bonus goodies. The new version (which may depart somewhat from RedHat) is supposed to be released in about a month.
