Dell (Japan) Offers 24-Hour Phone Services to Confirm PC Delivery Dates

Paul:
Says 1000 calls a day to check order status for DELL in Japan,not bad eh? Obviously these calls are from people who do not have access to the web yet,interesting I thought.
================================

October 28, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Dell Computer Corp. Japan announced that it launched "Dell-order-status voice response service" to automatically answer clients' telephone inquiries on the delivery dates of their personal computers.

The service is meant to provide extra convenience for customers in a rush.

Dell started from December 1997 a delivery information service called "Dell-order status" over the Web, and it is reportedly being accessed more than 1,000 times daily.. The company has had customer service staff take care of telephone inquiries for clients without Internet access. With the new service, it can meet such inquiries around the clock.

Users making inquiries must provide their order number and password when making a call.

Information given over the phone includes (1) the status of the product (such as "now being manufactured at a plant," "in delivery to Japan," "now being prepared for shipment at a domestic distribution center" and "already shipped from a domestic distribution center"), and (2) the product's scheduled delivery date. The status and scheduled delivery date is available on the Internet.

Hi PAL,

Re: . Should Dell do it again after Nov expiration, I will copy its strategy.

Thanks for the information -- it makes a lot of sense now.

Please let me know what you choose to do. I agree that you could do a lot worse than copying Dell's strategy. (Just ask CPQ! ;-)

Good trading,
KenB
