Good Morning {{{{{Everyone}}}}}!!!!!

Congratulations Bill! 18 years, my oh my...

I thought that I would share a true to life anniversary story with you all...

My grandfather was a big man. Though I don't know his exact statistics, he was well over 6'4" and 300 pounds. As the stereotype of big men goes, grandpa didn't say much... ever. Mostly when we visited he sat back and watched, smiled and laughed with his children and grandchildren.

A few years back, he and my grandmother celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The party plans began months in advance. Most of the family was involved and they had one thing in mind: they were bound and determined to make this one day that grandma and grandpa would not forget. They were planning to do things right.

The party was held outdoors with a covered dais set-up along with several awnings for the food and dinner seating. On the dais were two thrones. Grandma was in all her glory! She looked magnificent and was basking in all the attention being showered on her by the hundreds of friends and relatives at the party. She absolutely glowed. Grandpa, on the other hand, was the picture of discomfort. It was obvious that the rented tuxedo was chafing, his bow tie was partially undone and he was distinctly ill at ease with the crowd... and there was no way that he wanted any part of that seat of honor. As only daughters seem to be able to do, they were finally able to convince him that it was OK to sit on his throne.

After toasts, dinner and speeches by all the children, it was grandma and grandpa's turn. Grandma's speech was much as one might expect from anyone celebrating 50 years with someone that you love very much... it was filled with joy and good memories. Then it was Grandpa's turn. Grandma was concerned because she knew exactly how nervous he was about giving this speech.

Grandpa slowly raised himself from the chair and ambled toward the microphone. When he arrived, he decidedly put his hands in his pockets, leaned tentatively toward the microphone and began to tell this story in a soft voice...

"Ya know, June and I had been dating a while when this happened. It changed my whole life.

We were just ending a night out and I had pulled the car into her parent's drive. And as young'uns are wont to do, we were doing a little huggin' and a kissin'... and a little kissin' and a huggin'. Suddenly my door was flung open and as I looked up, there was June's father... and he wasn't real pleased by what he saw.

Some of you may remember that June's father was big and barrel chested and worked as a prison guard...

Anyway, he pulled me out of the car and said in a stern voice, 'son, you have two choices. You can marry my daughter or you can go to jail for 50 years.'

(Big pause here)

Well, if I had chosen to go to jail, today I would be a free man."

He then turned around and slowly walked back to his seat, seemingly oblivious to the chorus of laughter and clapping, but entirely focused on the smile my grandma had for him and him alone.
