More difficult times ahead for LU Cisco And H-P Team Up To Provide Networking Equipment SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:CSCO - news) and Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HWP - news) said they are teaming up to develop products that will combine data and voice communications on the Internet, as they seek to tap into a quickly growing market. The world's largest maker of equipment that links computers in networks and H-P, the No. 3 computer maker, said they will start selling the new products in the first quarter of 1999. Tuesday's agreement builds on an existing partnership between the two companies. As data, voice and video traffic increasingly become integrated into one network, Cisco is competing more and more with telephone equipment makers Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news) and Canada's Northern Telecom Ltd (NYSE:NT - news)., in addition to Ascend Communications Inc. (Nasdaq:ASND - news) ''The world of data and voice are transitioning very quickly, '' said Lew Platt, chairman and chief executive of Palo Alto, Calif.-based H-P at a briefing here to discuss the partnership. Cisco and H-P have already been working together and sharing technologies to sell products to providers of telephone and cable service. Platt and Cisco Chief Executive John Chambers said it is likely the two companies will also work with others to expand into new markets. In addition to making computers and printers, H-P also makes software that helps direct voice calls over traditional phone networks. Cisco and H-P will blend their technologies to ensure H-P's products will work with Cisco's networking equipment. H-P's SS7 hardware and software, used to route calls across different phone networks, competes with that sold by Stratus Computer Inc. (SRA - news) Ascend last week completed its $822 million of Stratus. San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco and H-P said more products that aim to combine voice and data traffic the Internet and phone networks later next year, after the first products ship in the first quarter of 1999.
