From Briefing.com:

LERNOUT & HAUSPIE SPEECH PRODUCTS NV (LHSPF) 40 1/4 -5. This developer and licensor of advanced speech technologies posted better than expected Q3 results, particularly as revenues surged more than 96% to $54.9 million from a year-ago. However, sometimes, beating the numbers is not good enough, especially when the SEC starts to question the accounting methods. According to a decision by the SEC, the company may be instructed to lower its in-process research and development write-offs for acquisitions and instead increase its goodwill recognition for its purchases. If so, this would have the effect of expensing certain costs that in the past had been written off and not counted as part of operating earnings. Accordingly, earnings would be lowered as the expense line would be increased. The fact that the SEC decision could force the restatement of past financial results has placed a cloud over the stock today. Last night, the company reported that it earned $0.22 a share, a penny ahead of the First Call estimate, and well ahead of year-ago net of $0.13 a share. While revenues almost doubled from a year-ago and gross margins as a percentage of sales increased from 62.7% to 67.3%, revenues for the period were also up 22% on a sequential basis. However, the better-than expected results are all for naught as a reduction in the write-offs line would certainly cause expenses to rise, leading to much lower profits than have been reported. Still, top line growth is strong and should be the foundation for future growth. In the short-run, however, investors will fret over the impact of the SEC decision on past financial statements.

Talk about resistance! Sure hope there aren't a bunch of GTC orders in @ 10 !

{ I feel like we should chip together our last few $$ of liq. net worth and put in a buy order at 10, just to open the gate. IMHVPO, if it breaks through 10, we are potentially looking at an easy add'l. 2 points. }

Periphonics Corporation Signs Distribution Agreement With CL Consultoria of Brazil

BOHEMIA, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--November 5, 1998

Distributor Will Supply Periphonics' Voice Processing Platforms

to Brazilian Businesses

Periphonics Corporation (NASDAQ: PERI), a leading worldwide provider of products and services for call processing solutions used in Computer Telephony Integration and Telecom Enhanced Network Services, today announced that CL Consultoria of Brazil has been selected as a supplier of its voice processing platforms. CL Consultoria will also provide marketing and support services for Periphonics' products to telecommunications, financial services and manufacturing companies in Brazil.

Founded in 1987, CL Consultoria provides computer and communications hardware, software and applications development to various industrial markets in Brazil. The addition of Periphonics solutions to CL Consultoria's offerings will provide Brazilian companies with products and services that automate call and transaction processing, resulting in improved customer satisfaction and reduced costs.

Donald B. Kaisermann, senior director, international business development at Periphonics, said, "Our relationship with CL Consultoria represents a major extension of Periphonics' involvement in the Latin American environment. Brazil has the largest population base in South America, and is a world leader in the utilization of advanced technology. We view this as a significant opportunity for our organizations to serve the on-line requirements of the Brazilian professional community."

"Brazilian telephone companies went through a privatizing process last July, and we are expecting more competition in the telephone market," stated Claudio Leig, director of CL Consultoria. "The telephone companies' new owners need to invest a lot in technology, and this represents an excellent opportunity to increase our market share by introducing Periphonics solutions. In addition, the pre-paid calling card market is unexplored in Brazil, and the present moment is very favorable for the introduction of this kind of service."

Periphonics develops, markets and supports products and services for Computer Telephony Integration and for Telecom Enhanced Network Services using technologies such as Interactive Voice Response (IVR), speech input, messaging, fax and Web Browsers. The Company's products and services automate call and transaction processing, increase call center agent productivity, and often create new revenue streams for our customers. Headquartered in Bohemia, New York (Long Island), Periphonics has systems installed in more than 50 countries.
