[ what do u think of IBM's deal w. SCOC? is that a threat to msft or sunw? ]

From what news reports say at moment IBM & Intel joint effort is threat to MSFT NT.

SUNW makes higher end products. I think!

Sounds like a funeral wake around here. Has no one on the thread heard about great publicity that Sun's new Solaris is getting? Definite setback for MSFT.

Sun goes in waves, I was good at predicting them last year, but not so good this year.
From what I know, I would say bad for Microsoft. What I have read so far says the same thing. These companies already compete against Sun. They want to make a better product. A better OS is only going to hurt companies with a worse OS. I suppose if their OS is really a lot better than Solaris, or their marketing is awesome it could hurt Sun, we'll see.

>>are u long IBM also?
No, I don't know that much about them.

I think my company paid around $3000.00 for the darwins about 6 months ago. Its low end, but it flies compared to the average PC. I think you can buy an adapter to use a "regular" monitor with a Sun. The Sales people there should be able to tell you more than I can. I didn't order the stuff myself. I like good monitors also :)

This IBM/SCO thing is a bit of a too little to late thing to be competitive with Sun ANYTHING. On top of that, it's been attempted before. They (thoughfully) asked Sun if they wanted to join this consortium and Sun, exercising their option to, laughed.

Unix server growth is OUTSTRIPPING NT growth (already). How much of that growing Unix pie slice does AIX (IBM) and UnixWare (SCO) represent? a: not much
