Xinhua English Newswire

Third generation mobile communications systems
will be widely used in China within the next five
year, according to a ranking executive with
[ Siemens Limited ] .

Juergen Lagleder, chief representative of Siemens China Ltd., said major
telecommunications equipment manufacturers plan to introduce
state-of-the-art technology.

Lagleder made the comments on Tuesday at PT/EXPO COMM CHINA

Major international telecom equipment companies such as Siemens,

Finnish-based Nokia opened an industrial complex on Monday in Beijing as

Heated competition has also emerged for various other products such as
switchboards, data exchange equipment and optical transmission facilities.

A number of Chinese manufacturers are exhibiting domestic
telecommunications products which fulfill all international standards.

The Huawei Technology Co. Ltd. has conducted extensive trials of its GSM
equipment in Shanghai and several provinces across the county, and plans to
start enter full-scale production in 1999. A small group of companies,
including Shanghai Bell Telephone Equipment Manufacturing Co. Ltd.,
currently dominate the Chinese market for program-controlled exchange
