Unigraphics Solutions, Dell Computer Team to Provide Workstation and CAD Software Solutions for Mechanical Engineers Solid Edge to be Loaded Directly at Dell Factory ST. LOUIS, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Unigraphics Solutions Inc. (NYSE: UGS - news) and Dell Computer Corporation (Nasdaq: DELL - news) today announced that Dell will offer Solid Edge, UGS' leading midrange CAD software product, as an order-ready option for Dell Precision(TM) WorkStations installed directly at the factory in Austin, Texas. This agreement is unique between hardware vendors and CAD/CAM software providers, and should be initially available within 30 days to customers in the United States and Canada with plans to expand the program worldwide.
The agreement provides a direct sales opportunity for Dell and expands opportunities for the Solid Edge reseller channel. Customers can either purchase a full Solid Edge license through Dell at the time of hardware purchase, or they may elect to have a 30-day evaluation copy installed and purchase later from a Solid Edge reseller.
''The agreement with Dell is a win for the customer, for Dell, for UGS' Solid Edge and for the local reseller,'' said John Mazzola, president and CEO of Unigraphics Solutions. ''The addition of Dell Computer as a provider of Solid Edge will significantly bolster our ability to distribute software, increase the visibility of Solid Edge and provide our customers with an innovative way of purchasing hardware and software. The agreement with Dell offers a convenient alternative for CAD users to very quickly obtain the productive engineering tools they need.''
''Dell customers will find the arrangement with UGS to be the perfect illustration of Dell's solution -- oriented approach to the workstation market,'' said Jeff Clarke, vice president, Dell Precision WorkStations. ''Dell will continue to maintain direct relationships with customers, making it easy to obtain the computing tools they need to do their jobs.''
Solid Edge resellers can expect expanded opportunity from the agreement between Dell and UGS through software upgrades, Solid Edge training and consulting services, additional downstream engineering software sales and enhanced overall visibility of the software.
''Loading trial versions or fully licensed copies of Solid Edge directly on Dell Precision WorkStations will provide more mechanical designers -- especially existing 2D CAD users -- an opportunity to experience the advantages of Windows(R)-based 3D solid modeling,'' said Shawn Oxley, vice president and co-founder of Pyramid Solutions, a gold-level, Solid Edge reseller based in Dallas, with technical and sales offices in most major U.S. cities. ''Being associated with a household name such as Dell greatly expands our ability to improve the productivity of design engineers across the country.''
The agreement was announced on October 28 at both M/Tech '98, McCormick Place, Chicago, and the Daratech Reseller Conference in Los Angeles. ''This announcement could signal a new paradigm in the way CAD software is distributed to the market,'' said Charles Foundyller, president of Daratech.
