I'll take a piece of that "us" statement.

Precisely. They are known by their hypocrisy.

David - re: "Pinochet is a murderer. Castro, it is constantly point out, has fed and educated his people."

Pinochet is a murderer; Castro is a murderer who just happens to still be in power. As far as feeding and educating his people, I don't consider the last bastion of traditional communism to be exactly successful - do you?

Mr. K.

Which community do you include in the "us" part of your statement.

I was referring to human beings in general.

Certainly not your fellow reporters. Generally, they absolutely do make these distinctions.

Reporters generally cover the story they're assigned by their editors. The mainstream media does have some blindspots with regard to overseas human rights violations, but they are not along a left-right divide. For example, the media did a good job of covering the Khmer Rouge's autogenocide while all but ignoring Indonesia's wiping out of 1/3 of the people of East Timor. The blind spots are generally institutional or even accidental, not political.

Pinochet is a murderer. Castro, it is constantly point out, has fed and educated his people.

Please direct me to one article in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, Miami Herald, Boston Globe, (papers with international desks) or from the Associated Press or Reuters that makes such a point.
