Transamerica fund grows 43.6 percent

The top capital appreciation fund in the CBS.MarketWatch.com SuperStar fund radar for the one-year period ending Oct.27, 1998 is Transamerica Investors Premier Aggressive Growth Fund (TPAGX). This young no-load fund has an impressive one-year return of 43.6 percent. Started in mid 1997, the fund has gained 45.3 percent since inception and currently sports a year-to-date gain of 34.6 percent. Fund manager Phillip Treick keeps turnover low at 17 percent and focuses on growing franchises protected by high barriers to competition.

As of Sept. 30 1998, nearly 90 percent of the $70 million portfolio was invested in equities, with the remainder in cash or cash equivalents. Over 60 percent of assets are tied up in the top ten holdings of the fund. Dell Computer (DELL) is the most notable holding, comprising nearly ten percent of the portfolio. Amazon.Com (AMZN), insurer General Re Corp. (GRN) and food service concern Sodexho Marriott Services (SDH) are prominent as well, each carrying positions over seven percent. There are currently 88 equity holdings in the portfolio.
