<In all fairness, there are many who muse about the spiritual
who do their damndest to make the world a better place ->

Of course there are. I know many people like that, and respect them. I support and am associated in some volunteer work with an organization called the Fellowship of Reconciliation, a multi- denominational but religious group of idealistic social activists. It is my impression that the fine people I know from the FOR would be as fine if they were atheists. I know some of them who have non religious family members -- siblings, children -- who are wonderful people like them.

And the truth is I personally have never heard the words like "my spiritual life" used by any of these good people. (Maybe they talk that way when I'm not around!)
