Paul,

Actually you know that is a very valid concern. With the KNI hype starting Intel has to be careful not to stall current sales and also not to have too many non-KNI wafers on the go. They also have to make sure that they balance the wafers correctly because much like the PMMX introduction they have 3 distinct masks to process (Celeron, KNI PII, vanilla PII). This could either be excellent for Intel or a big mess.

Steve

PS. I am considering some Intel as an AMD hedge play.. thinking about it anyway ;-)

Paul Engel. Re: "Intel was stuck with a huge pipeline full of the non-MMX's and stumbled during the conversion in Q1 and Q297." Based on history this is a legitimate concern. However, I wonder if we now face a different situation with the the shrinking of the inventory in the channel and more companies following the BTO model. Hopefully, Intel learned that lesson too.

Paul, re:My concern for next year, however, is Intel's Katmai Ramp. Recall the very fast
Pentium MMX conversion in 1997? Intel was stuck with a huge pipeline full of the
non-MMX's and stumbled during the conversion in Q1 and Q297.

During the Q&A of Intel's last CC, Intel thought the Katmai ramp would be slower than the MMX ramp. This is a big concern. I hope Intel does a better job of getting the right product mix.
