From Streetlife:

"AMAZON.COM AND ITS TECHNO BUDDIES.... had another fine
run today. Amazon.com produced some decent results,
with earnings beating estimates by 8 cents. And its
sales--well!--they rose by 306% since last year. That's
a lot of books. AMZN picked up a moderate 3/4 point.
But meanwhile other technologies glowed.... AOL jumped
2 1/4 points. Cisco up 2 1/8. And Dell? Up another 2
3/8, baby! Another Internet note: I know I'll get
called a curmudgeon for this, but eBay beats the Street
by 3 cents and suddenly everyone is calling it the
"cornerstone of the Internet" (apparently it's an
octangular house). Not sure I buy it. Does one good
quarter make a "cornerstone"?

Puff Daddy,

You are right. AOL may be expensive, but they can get a premium over other ISP/networks after acquiring their clients, mostly because people don't want to hassle with new email addresses and AOL does provide some unique features.

AMZN does not have this leverage. If they try to increase profitability be increasing prices their revenues would freefall.

Also I noted that the expenses (not counting product development) still grew faster than gross profit. Wasn't that suppose to change?

That 'we're on the road to profitability' statment looks like it is just bullsh*t. Maybe the CEO could be more specific and explain to me what the word 'profit' means again.
