One very big difference between the cos, among many: Amazon is simply a retailer of products purchased from wholesalers. Books are essentially commodities. The publisher sells to wholesalers, who sell to retailers like Amazon, B&N, WMT, Costco, etc. Selling books on the 'net is no longer a new concept. As more and more people become aware of WMT's site (which sells a whole lot more than books and CDs) and B&N's site, plus the plethora of other book sites, Amazon's sales momentum will stall.

I find it hard to believe that there is anyone left in the Western industrialized world who has not already heard of Amazon.com. Here in the Pacific NW, Amazon's radio ads are so frequent that they are becoming annoying.
