Baan Reports 3rd-Qtr Loss, Will Cut Workforce 20% (Update1)
(Adds analysts' comments in 4th paragraph; rewrites.)

Barneveld, Netherlands, Oct. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Baan NV, a
Dutch maker of business-management software, said it's
overhauling its management, appointing a new president and
cutting a fifth of its workforce as it reported widening losses.

The company reported a third-quarter loss of $31.7 million,
or 16 cents a share, at the lower end of analysts' expectations,
compared with net income of $18.3 million, or 9 cents a share,
in the year-earlier period. It named Mary Coleman president and
said it would cut 20 percent of its 6,000-member workforce. Baan
also said it would take a one-time pretax charge of $110
million, resulting in a net loss for the fourth quarter.

Baan is losing ground in the $14.4 billion market for
software that helps companies track inventories and personnel as
smaller manufacturers, which account for 70 percent of Baan's
sales, rein in spending.

''It's a downward spiral,'' said Clara van der Elst, an
analyst at ABN Amro. ''Software companies are especially
vulnerable as customers lose confidence and don't want to buy
from a company that may not be around.''.....

Shane, About Rhythm and R/3...

One of the reasons i2 has RhythmLink is to help solve (or
get around) data integration issues. Here's a quote from i2's web site in this regard...

" what types of applications or data sources can I integrate?
RhythmLink is a multi-tiered, client-server solution that provides a single graphical interface which speeds integration of data sources and enterprise applications. The data sources can be relational or non-relational databases, or contain various types of file structures.  RhythmLink also allows other applications such as ERP systems and other partner applications to interact with RHYTHM through standard messaging technologies such as CORBA and DCOM.  Partner applications with specific integration points such as SAP™, SSA, and Oracle can also be accommodated. "

Even more to the point, though, unless I am mistaken, Rhythm and R/3 are already up and working together at sites like Vanity Fair, OxyChem, Texas Instruments, Johnson & Johnson Medical, and Siemens. I can't say that's BIBLE. But, I've heard second-hand
that these are R/3-Rhythm reference sites.

As to whether these implementations have been easy or not...
well... I would assume they haven't been easy. SAP with all its
proprietariness, etc...

JMHO,
