Amazon.com -2: Co. Plans To Be Destination Online Retailer

In a conference call for analysts following its third-quarter earnings release Wednesday, Amazon.com
indicated it plans to be not only a book and music retailer but also a destination online retailer, said
Lauren Cooks Levitan, an analyst with BancBoston Robertson Stephens.

"Clearly the company is showing that customers have embraced Amazon not only as a destination book
retailer, but now they've done so on the music front as well," Levitan said. "So the question becomes in
how many other categories can they leverage their quite formidable customer base to continue growth.

Brown of Volpe Brown Whelan, said the company is very optimistic it can "extend the Amazon brand
across categories and geographies." To date, he said, Amazon has been happy with the response its
products have received in Europe, particularly Germany and the United Kingdom.

Levitan said the company's recent acquisition of such companies as PlanetAll and Junglee Corp. show
Amazon.com potentially plans to offer more services and products.

"What they are, they weren't in any hurry to elaborate on," Levitan said.

Levitan said the company also said it will continue to spend aggressively to pursue its expansion plan.

"Which is another way to say even with revenue growth, expect continuing significant operating losses,"
Levitan said.

She said that although analysts asked about the mid-October suit Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) filed
against Amazon.com, the company declined to comment citing pending litigation.

In the suit, Wal-Mart charges that Amazon.com stole trade secrets by hiring a group of Wal-Mart
employees with knowledge of its computer system.
