Why would you ask me a technical question when there are so many techies around here?

I will have to ask my husband. Again!!!. And he only tinkers with computer code. He does not earn his salary by writing code.

He thought the new IBM alliance would threaten NT. Why? He did not tell me, specifically. So, I will have to ask him. As you mentioned, IBM produces large computers. They are large, main-frame computers. Sun produces high-end desk-top computers. So we may be comparing apples to oranges. Others on this thread would know for sure.

As far as MSFT is concerned, the company has promised to put a high-end NT operating system on the market and the company has been unable to do so, according to the article in, The New York Times.

I will check the news again but there was a special report on the evening business news with Paul Kangas about Sun's new system. I will try and find a summary of the report.

I do NOT know if MSFT promised that their new version of NT would have a powerful 64-bit addressing system. And I do not know if IBM will produce a 64-bit addressing system on a desk top.

What is important here is that SUN can ship their new Solaris system next Tuesday, according to the newspaper.

< Solaris 7 features a 64-bit addressing>is there any other existing OS that can address 64 bit? what OS would IBM use for their new world's biggest computer?why is every one so concerned w. msft instead of IBM? >

Sonki, you should ask others on the thread to respond to your question. My husband is very, very busy. I doubt that I will have a chance to talk to him today.

He has used Sun, HWP and Silicon Graphics workstations. The machine he uses depends upon what kind of project he may be doing. Also, as I mentioned b4, he does not write code for a living. And he does not repair computers for a living.

However, he does write code for fun!!! (He even wrote his own code for a project that he was doing on HWP workstation but a professional built the interface and installed the code.) So what my husband knows, he has learned on his own. He has never taken computer courses.

Since there are so many people here who can tell you off the top of their heads about IBM's new alliance, MSFT's proposed version of high-end NT, you should ask them.

Hopefully, some one will come forward and answer your questions.

I am sorry that I could not help you.
