rudedog, re: <<Dell may well be able to pull off a partnering model here, but it will be a big leap of faith for an enterprise customer.>>

If by remote chance DELL where to choke on their storage venture, I feel it will expose a flaw in DELLs model and slow DELLs drive further up the enterprise IT food chain. Do you agree with this thinking?

I don't think you appreciate the complexity of fielding storage area network
I think the way the Dell Enterprise manufacturing method works is they refer to outside vendors if you want to buy one. If you want to buy several they work with the customer and consultants to develop the basic configuration, standard variations, and those areas which need to be customized (Device IDs, IP address etc). These are linked to the customer specific web site and whenever they place another order the box is built and configured and pre-loaded with the correct information. The advantage to the customer is tremendous since Dell essentially holds all the inventory for spares and expansion and the customer just needs to click on the web page and a new machine, custom built with their choice of components and software is delivered.
