Rick, What E finds smug (I think) and I find pretentious is your apparent assumption that without a God-figure there is no spirituality, and that the lives of atheists are somehow lacking a spiritual dimension which your life has. I see no foundation for this assumption. Personally, I suspect that organized religions and God-concepts obstruct spiritual awareness more than they enhance it. To use your swimming analogy: I swam in that river for a long time, having grown up in a religious family. But when I reached an age where I chose to question all assumptions, I looked at myself and realized that I simply didn't believe it, any of it. So I walked out of the river, dried off, walked to the river on the other side, and dove in. I like it better where I am. Steve
