Capp, Al (1909-1979), American comic-strip artist, creator of the comic
strip Li'l Abner, which is considered one of the most important comic
strips of its era. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut. Capp started
Li'l Abner in 1934, and it appeared in newspapers until 1977. He created
a mythical hillbilly land called Dogpatch and used it as a satire on
American society and culture. The characters included Li'l Abner; his
parents, Mammy and Pappy Yokum; Daisy Mae, who pursued Abner for years
and eventually married him; Gat Garson, a gangster who looked exactly
like Abner; Fearless Fosdick, a parody of comic-strip detective Dick
Tracy; Sadie Hawkins; and the eternally unlucky Joe Bpftsk. The comic
strip ridiculed business tycoons, politicians, gangsters, experts,
entertainers, and members of upper-class society.
