3Com Executive Upbeat About 2nd Qtr: Bloomberg Forum

Singapore, Oct. 29 (Bloomberg) -- 3Com Corp., the world's No. 2
computer networking company, said it expects strong growth in fiscal
second-quarter profit as sales expanded throughout the group. ''We're
feeling good about how the quarter is going,'' Douglas Spreng, a
senior vice president, told a Bloomberg Forum. ''We expect to see some
solid growth in our second fiscal quarter as we find significant sales
uptake in the quarter, which ends in November, and as we see a strong
uptake in the Asian market place.'' He declined to say if the Santa
Clara, California, company will beat analysts' expectations.

3Com's first-quarter profit fell 49 percent as the company was hurt by
price cuts on modems and other low-cost Internet computer equipment.

The company is expected to earn 31 cents a share in the second quarter,
the average estimate of analysts polled by IBES International Inc., up
from 4 cents in the year-earlier period.

Meanwhile, 3Com is also stepping up its investments in Asia. It's
opening a new plant in Singapore on Friday. The factory, which cost
$70 million, will make the company's line of products including
computer interface cards, hand-held organizers and computer modems.
''We still view the entire Asia market place as a tremendous
opportunity for grow, especially for the networking industry,'' he said.

In Asia, its biggest customers include the world's biggest computer
makers such as Dell Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Gateway
2000 Inc. Spreng also said the speculation of its merger with Intel
Corp. isn't true.

3Com shares rose 15/32 to 34 1/4 in late morning U.S. trading of 1.61
million, compared with the three-month daily average of 7.72 million.

Joe,

Are they really having a bad quarter. I can see it happening if they are overpaying for CSCO equipment <VBG>

Re: Networking programming. ACtually network program (especially real-time type work) is very very challengine in limited bandwidth situtations. In fact network program is one of the few areas left where hard core programmers like to hang out.

As for the shuttle blowing up, it didn't happen and John is safely in orbit and vomitting <VBG>
