>It also would pull us right back into the "separate but equal" mentality with respect to minority kids, who would most likely not be as readily accepted to the primarily white schools etc.< There is implicit racism in the suggestion that Blacks should get into White schools, as opposed to the better schools, whatever their demographics. Vouchers resonate with Blacks because they understand that over the long haul, competition will increase the quality of education in their communities. Everyone wants to provide for "the minorities", and then when "the minorities" finally see clear to provide for themselves, the liberals present stumbling block after stumbling block. Blacks are devastated, very hurt and distrustful because of slavery. We will not overcome this by dumb societal programs. We will really never discover the key to excellent education because the key is, on the surface, very much unrelated to education. Slightly oversimplfied, the key to excellent education, is Love. Love, given from infancy through adulthood. You give a child of normal intelligence Love (I mean here Love that is nearly inhuman), you suffer with him, patiently endure his lunacies, discipline him, and show him you believe in him, that you are willing to sacrfice all for him, and that child will kill to learn everything you throw at him. You will simply not be able to teach the kid because after awhile, he will be so motivated he will run right by you, doing things you could not have imagined. He will kill and utterly smash anything that gets in his way. I have seen this in six children, one of which is Black (and without knowing their races, the top schools in this country are falling all over the older two to get them). Public schools cannot compare here. Surely, out of thousands it will produce the stellar scholar. Out of hundreds it will produce an adequate, literate person. But this is unimpressive. Give me an infant (it has to be an infant), of normal intellect, any infant, whatever the race, whatever the gender. I will Love it just as if it were my own body, and in eight to twelve years, will present to you a confident, intensly sharp, well-adjusted scholar with integrity. Love is the ingredient that we must somehow use to our advantage, and there are indeed very powerful ways to use it societally. But no one likes this talk. Too mushy, too abstract. And since it does not promise to allow politicians to place umbilical cords into people's wallets, it will never be contemplated. So I teach my own children, and see my tax dollars to the public school system merely as a fee for the privilege. (gotta go)
