CIEN went ballistic today on buyout/merger rumors again plus possible big contract to be announced next week. Tempted to jump in CIEN but did not.

Perhaps TLAB-CIEN marriage again?

Tellabs gains after landing China deal

Shares of Tellabs Inc. (Nasdaq: TLAB) rose 1 5/8 to 55 5/8 Thursday after the phone equipment maker said that the Beijing Telecommunications Administration tapped the company to manage the city's data traffic. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Beijing is the capital of China, with a population exceeding 11 million. Though doing business in China has proven difficult for many companies, telecommunications companies have bucked the trend. China is mostly rural areas, making wireless communications a booming business. Networking companies, such as Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERICY), have won multi-million dollar contracts to install systems to link up cities and its citizens.

On Wednesday, First Albany Corp. began coverage with a "buy" rating and a 12-month share price target at $72.

In related news, Ciena Corp. (Nasdaq: CIEN) shares gained 4 to 16 1/4 on speculation that the company may be an acquisition target. Earlier this year, Tellabs scuttled plans to join with the company. Ciena shares have lost three-quarters of their value since Tellabs first announced merger plans in June.
