config1:
ide1 - HD3.2/master, CDROM/slave
ide2 - HD7.6/master

Config2:
ide1 - HD3.2/master
ide2 - HD7.6/master, CDROM/slave

Config3:
ide1 - HD3.2/master, HD7.6/slave
ide2 - CDROM/slave

you'll probably see your best overall performance
with Config 2.

What if there was an Ide tape machine in the mix? Which is my lineup. I spec'd the two HDDs on ide 1 and the cd-rom/tape on ide 2 based on the premise that with a full set of ide devices it would be best to not mix transfer speeds.
The other option being having the advantages of having the two HDDs both masters but the disadvantages of the mixed channels. Is this a six of one half a dozon of the other sorta thing or are there more advantages with the unmixed config or the two master drives config?
