Steven,

I have not presented anthropomorphic conceptions of "God". In fact I have made particular reference to my not believing in this conception, and have scrupulously tried to confine this discussion to the existence (or not) of God/Spirit/Tao/ Great One/Essence . . . and not specific religions' conceptions of God.

I don't see God as a being with a long white beard, who wears a robe, and sits on a throne in the clouds waiting to judge us. . .

You talk about being able to "find the essence". I'm sure you can (and have) but acknowledgement of the existence of essence seems to conflict with your stated atheism. Didn't we just establish a linkage between god-spirit-essence? (I really hate being pedantic. Was a valid point made with the Webster definitions or am I obviously missing something?)

Now that I have restated my position, can you understand how I might be confused regarding the incompatibility of atheism and spirituality?

Rick

p.s. I think REAL, dyed in the wool atheists are very very rare, and I don't really believe you are one of them (inspite of your professing to be so). I think you are someone who has an individual god concept which does not conform to the concept of the religion in which you were raised. Your independence from traditional religious thought, in my opinion, does not constitute atheism.
