SanDisk Doubles the Capacity of CompactFlash Cards, MultiMediaCard, PC Cards and Embedded Flash Chipsets
Products Are Based On New 128 Megabit Flash Chip Designed by SanDisk
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 2, 1998--SanDisk Corporation (SNDK: NASDAQ) today introduced a new generation of flash memory technology that doubles the capacity of its CompactFlash(TM) (CF(TM)) cards, MultiMediaCards, Type II PC cards, FlashDrives and flash chipsets. The high performance flash products are based on a new 128 megabit (Mbit) binary (standard) flash chip designed by SanDisk.
With the new technology, SanDisk's top capacity CompactFlash cards double from 48 megabyte (MB) to 96MB, Type II PC cards increase in capacity from 220 to 440MB and SanDisk's flash chipsets increase in capacity from 128Mbit (16MB) to 256Mbit (32MB). The top capacity of the MultiMediaCard rises to 16MB from 8MB while it increases from 220MB to 440MB on SanDisk's 2.5 and 3.5-inch FlashDrives. The higher density chip also allows SanDisk to lower the price per megabyte of SanDisk's 128Mbit generation products over earlier products.
The new products will be demonstrated at COMDEX in Las Vegas, Nev., November 16-20 at the SanDisk booth, Las Vegas Convention Center, North Hall, L-6470.
Nelson Chan, SanDisk's vice president of marketing, said, ''SanDisk already is the world's largest supplier of flash memory cards, according to independent market research surveys, and with these new higher capacity products we intend to remain the industry market leader. The demand for higher capacity PC cards, and lower flash card prices, is an on-going reality, and SanDisk will continue to meet those demands.''
He added that ''the higher capacity CompactFlash cards will be especially useful to the many new owners of high-resolution, mega-pixel digital cameras. When set at the highest resolution setting, those cameras typically require a megabyte or more of memory to capture and store each image. These new CF digital film cards will be more convenient and economical for digital camera owners.''
''CompactFlash continues to advance in capacity, speed and reliability while becoming even more competitive,'' said Lori Broache, vice president, Worldwide Marketing, Digital & Applied Imaging, Eastman Kodak Company. ''SanDisk continues to play an influential role in this key technical market.''
Sampling of the new SanDisk flash memory cards and chipsets will start in December with production shipments slated for the first quarter of 1999. The 128Mbit-based CompactFlash cards will be available in 16, 32, 48, 64, 80 and 96MB capacities while Type II PC cards will be offered in 280, 350 and 440MB capacities. Some sample pricing in high volume OEM capacities: 96MB CompactFlash card, $220; 440MB Type II PC card, $895; 16MB MultiMediaCard, $49; 440MB FlashDrive, $895; and the 256Mbit (32MB) flash chipset, $59.
