As I recall it, the development of the Pentium by Intel was just called the P5 project. Everyone assumed they would name it the 586. But when it was ruled that Intel lost the trademark on 386, they dumped the numbering scheme and went to made up words, like Pentium, Celeron, Xeon. On the other hand, I think the project code names now are all rivers, mountains, cities in Oregon and California where the chips are designed
