Paul,

I guess the instruction set was just fine.

I have to agree for several reasons.

1. The complexity of the x86 architecture has paid the salaries of thousands of engineers for a long time. A nice simple RISC architecture would have put a lot of good hardware people out of work.

2. The complexity of the x86 architecture has paid the salaries of thousands of compiler writers. A nice simple RISC architecture would have put a lot of good software people out of work.

3. The complexity of the x86 architecture makes this thread possible. This is just too much fun.

Paul,

Lsst I heard, nobody ever came up with an algorithm that couldn't work on x86 instructions.

Or an abacus.
