Are you trying to draw a parallel between Intel shipping 4-way Xeon servers but not 14-way (16-way?) and DEC not shipping any 21264s at all? I think this is a poor comparison.As far a Merced goes, Intel has taken a lot of heat for delaying that processor, but nobody is boasting how great it's performance will be compared to an existing processor shipping today.
