George,

Any thoughts on COMS? Looks like it's getting to
regain the limelight for hi-tech leadership in '99.

GG, regarding a new unit of measurement for f-o transmission capacity, you wrote:

>What would you think of a gigahertz/dBm/kilometer unit? A GDK. Or a GCU for short (Gilder-Coluccio Unit). Power is the crucial constraint and distance between EDFAs is critical to costs.<"

I like the GCU idea, in deference to your standings in the polls, although I think the ANSI folks would have a problem with it, since it wasn't invented there.

How about introducing the LOC per second? or Giga LOC/sec.

This would inevitably be mutated to the GLOC, pronounced "glock" and we could then tell everyone that the 'G' stands for you know who.

Let's face it, it already has near-universal acceptance in lay terms... that is, one LOC is equal to the entire Library of Congress. [smile]

ps - I knew that if I sat on this long enough, it would eventually bear fruit...
