3COM has a phone number you can call and it tests your line to see if you are 56K capable.

I know some people who get 128K ISDN for about $100, ISP included (not in my area, though). In my area, one of the local ISP's offers satelite for $50, which is a lot cheaper than DirecPC. I have Time Warner cable (RoadRunner)--very nice @ $50.
