CNBC "Top 100"- I want to keep this list on my thread handy-just skip Labor Day, 1998 (View the alphabetical listing.) "Top 100" Screens by Category (as of Sept. 4, 1998) Hour 1: Sectors Our research suggests that investors over the rest of the year will continue to favor the strongest large-cap issues with minimal regard to traditional yardsticks of value. To select stocks in sectors, we therefore started with a market cap of $5 billion, then eliminated troubled stocks trading below their 200-day moving averages. We then applied a special price-momentum screen, the FOG index, that assigns a high ranking to stocks that have advanced the most over the past 12 months but have consolidated or stumbled in the most recent month and quarter. This "breather" often setsstocks up for a new run of strong gains, according to our research. We chose the stocks in each sector with the highest FOG index. (The FOG formula, developed by Ford Investors Services of San Diego: 12-mo % price gain minus 3-mo % gain, minus 3 times the 1-mo % gain.)
