I have been thinking about selling covered calls. ...
From personal experience, never sell covered calls unless you are willing to let the stock get called. I have made money buying good stocks, Dell, CSCO, RMBS and selling covered calls at the next higher strike price. Since these are good stocks they get called more than half the time although the resulting sell price and option premium is usually a bit better than just buying and selling . After they get called I just buy them back.

I made the mistake of selling some covered calls on my long position and when the price rose more than I guessed I realized I was not willing to let the stock get called. I had to locate real dollars (not paper profits) to buy back the calls at a loss. For me, covered calls are now restricted to those stocks that are for active trading and not for core holdings.
