Agree...hairdressers wouldn't have been my choice either.

No, the ship didn't blow up, but it did 'crash'--crash landing in a swamp. Thus, the crash occurred as foretold, but was much less of a catastrophic event than some had imagined it would be. (Hmmm...) And yes, part of the joke was that the ship crash landed on pre-historic earth, that this event wiped out the apelike humanoid species that was living here at the time, and that this ship full of useless loonies were our actual ancestors. (Very plausible explanation for the absence of the "missing link" and a few other human mysteries).

The entire Hitchhiker series of shows and books is an absolute hoot, which is probably why you remember the segment that you saw so well. Thanks for reminding me of it.
