Mitsubishi to turn out the lights on US chip operations.

Some interesting data on technology penetration.....

According to CEMA's telephone surveys of household penetration, as
of June, 98% of U.S. homes had color TV, 98% had radios, 96% had corded
telephones, 91% had VCRs, 71% had some form of CD (including CD-ROM),
61% had TV with stereo sound, 44% had a personal computer, 32% had a
camcorder, 29% had a modem (up sharply since 1996), 18% had multi-line
phones, 12% had projection TV (but 20% said they had home-theater
systems), 12% had satellite receivers (this is a slightly higher
percentage than satellite-industry figures would provide), and a very
constant 2% had laserdisc players.

John R., Do you know who these guys are that are sharing DirecTV encoders?

You don't often hear about USSB, sharing satellites and an
encoding system with DirecTV. As of September 30, they had just over
two million subscribers (including 150,000 getting a free month), and
their third-quarter loss was down to about $9 million from a previous
$28 million.
