10/30 17:42 Viagra sales limp in LatAm due to health fears BUENOS AIRES, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Latin American sales of the impotency-treatment drug Viagra have been less than stellar because men appear to be be afraid of the drug's side effects, an official of U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc <PFE.N>said on Friday. "In Latin America it didn't cause a boom because people were afraid of Viagra after what they read in the newspapers," regional president Clive Miles in an interview. Compared to the impact of the drug in the United States, where it was first launched, sales in Latin American are low, but Pfizer expects them to improve in the next few years. He was talking on the sidelines of a lecture by Simon Campbell, one of the scientists who developed the best-selling male impotence drug which restores erectile function. The drug's sales have been clouded by worries it might cause heart attacks in men taking it. But Campbell said, "A lot of those reports about cardiovascular problems have been sensationalized. Viagra is not really different from any other new drug, though it will take it a couple of years to settle in the market." Health authorities in the United States are checking at least 69 deaths that could be linked to Viagra. In Argentina, the press gave front-page coverage to the death of a businessman who took Viagra together with large quantities of alcohol. "Viagra does not give superpowers," said Campbell. "It is a serious drug for a serious condition. We do not support any recreational use." moneynet.com @NEWS-P1&Index=0&HeadlineURL=../News/NewsHeadlines.asp&DISABLE_FORM=&NAVSVC=News\Company
