I may eventually have to re-short CDRD. It may be up now in sympathy with the launch of Iridium.

Iridium's CEO admitted that their satellite system doesn't work in metropolitan areas, and so their handset will also interface with cellular systems (which will also be much cheaper) when the user is in a metropolitan area.

CDRD's system also won't provide acceptable direct-from-satellite radio reception in metropolitan areas, and so they are adding terrestrial relay stations in metropolitan areas. CDRD is receiving big funding to do all this, but I just don't see how they are going to make it work technically. Needing relay stations in every conceivable big metro area in the U.S. is too much to overcome, in my opinion, at least when the only thing at stake is the support of a radio network.
