Also, LU has been able to recruit some key people from
Ascend including the technical manager of their core
switching group.

LU is a partner with ASND. They have worked closely together on
many projects and LU is very impressed with the talented
engineering staff at ASND. ASND has everything that LU needs
to compete with CSCO and NT.

I agree. However, I believe their decision will be based on far more factors than those you've listed, not the least of which are price, company cultures, and Mory's willingness to be bought.

The surprise will be is LU decides to go it alone which I think is the most likely scenerio.

I strongly doubt they'll go it alone. Too many public comments have indicated otherwise for this to be the case. Having said this, I'm expecting their biggest partnership to be in the form of an alliance, not buyout. By comparison, their acquisitions most likely will be modest.

And of course I could be way out in left field.

I agree that ASND would be a good fit for LU, but I think Siemens or Alcatel would be a more likely suitor for NN than LU. But now with their ban lifted and some lofty share prices, LU can make a couple of acquisitions and pay with overpriced stock. Anyone heard anything re: Cabletron?
