George, Extract of Antler is often prescribed in China for old folks and sort of gets the juices flowing. It is held in fairly high esteem there, and I have been a student of their view in the past. In fact, I take and have found effective several of their more highly viewed agents. Almost all are mostly without harmful effects and some have properties that we in the west have yet to discover. The effect of these agents is slow and subtle, but in my opinion definite. Their system works in harmony with bodily functions and is designed to enhance the positive. We in the west tend to go for the big powerful stuff which works for a while, but then proves itself ineffective in the long run. I am being a little harsh here, but an example would be antibiotics. When they were discovered, they were most effective, but through abuse and overprescribing by uninformed and weak physicians, they have been overcome by the most inventive bugs. In the town where I practice and live, almost every patient with a "cold" gets an antibiotic. This is stupid and counterproductive. Colds are caused by virus. Although there can be opportunistic bacterial invasion, the practice leads mostly to no improvement in the patient and greater bacterial resistance. Most do not know how potentially serious this has become. The most dangerous thing that one can do today is visit a hospital. The bugs there are very resistant and we have semingly forgotten the scrupulous sterile techniques that we had when we had no antibiotics. Nosocomial or hospital acquired infections are great killers, and we have had to go to bigger and bigger guns to control them, and those are presently failing in greater number. The average human has a tremendous immune system. It has its faults, but all in all, it is great. Frogs have it, and most organisms that are still alive have it. We have seen what happens when that system breaks down as does in AIDS and other related conditions. We become subject to every opportunisic organism. There are known and perhaps many enhancers of the immune system. One of the best is happiness, joy, laughter and a healthy lifestyle. Diet is important. Unfortunately, most are not happy, joyous, and most unfornutate, most do not enjoy a healthy lifestyle nor diet. We are beginning to see and explore certain drugs and herbs and diets that seem to enhance the immune system. Perhaps more work is to be done in that area. We have all ethnic cures which are revered by our old mothers and grandmothers. Ever heard of "Jewish penicillin"--AKA chicken soup! Combined with motherly care and a little rest, it is a powerful drug, so to speak! There is some interesting work being done in the area of "animal antibiotics". These are substances produced in many organisms which are rather ubiquitous and part of the animal defense system and are peptides which punch holes in the bacterial cell wall and seemingly, since they have been around for millions of years would present a problem for the development of bacterial resistance. Not to say that it does not happen, but it is certainly more troblesome for the little critters. Bacteria have a most troublesome feature and that is that they transfer little genomic packets from one to the other that make them resistant to our chemical artillery. Surprisingly, they never seem to forget. A recent approach has been to introduce a higher population of non resistant bacteria and let them overpopulate the rememberers. The result of that remains to be seen. Recent results are encouraging, but perhaps a different approach is required. Perhaps a very conservative use of antibiotics coupled with an approach to enhancing our natural defenses and truth in health care coupled with potential advances in the biotech area will keep us alive! Your doctor should first tell you that he has not all the answers, and neither do the drug industry representatives that frequently visit him! Now, let me say that most of the physicians that I know are honest, very hard working and dedicated persons. Most are extremely ethical and concerned. Most that I know also find themselves in situations that would cause them to have doubt about their profession and their role in it. Traditionally, our physicians have been dedicated persons who have served us well. Enter the Insurance companies and "Managed care". Managed care means produce a profit for the "manager of the care". This has been a boon for insurance and pharmaceutical companies. Also for managed pharmacy owners and drug wholesalers. This system is in dissaray and will perhaps soon be supplanted. Here is the problem. Large providers get "special prices" from large manufacturers and wholesalers. Large means profit motivated and not patient motivated. Let them say different here! Small physican organizations, small pharmacies, small anything is not able to avail itself of the differential pricing which the "big guys" demand. Here is my perception of the result for the consumer-- You get not to choose thy physician, nor thy pharmacist, nor thy nurse, nor thy hospital, nor nothing else. If thy prescription does not arrive in the mail, then thy need to beg thy local pharmacist to call thy insurance company and beg therefore for thy salvation! Mostly, I do that, but I must tell you that the day will come when I will not! Choose ye thy provider, and demand ye the service that ye desire, or be forever in "limbo". There are the "sneakers in" who get their medicine through the mail that would make me believe that I am their pharmacist--My heart is hardened against them and though I break down from time to time, I shall send them to their source--"The Mail"! Slow day, only saved one life that I know of, Jack!!!
